Mini splits and you

A ductless mini split system is a flexible solution for temperature management. These systems can be used for both heating and cooling. As the name implies there is no duct work, making the mini split system ideal for houses with non-ducted HVAC systems as well as room additions where installing or extending duct work is not feasible.

The system is 2 main components; and indoor air-handling unit and an outdoor compressor/condenser. There is a conduit which houses the power cable, refrigerant tubing and drain that links the indoor and outdoor units. One of the biggest benefits of the ductless system is that all of the noisy components are outside the house meaning a quiet, comfortable atmosphere inside.

One of the main advantages of the ductless mini split is the flexibility. Many systems come with multiple indoor units and one outdoor unit. Each indoor unit can be attached to its own thermostat. Each indoor zone can then be heated or cooled as needed. Zoning also gives the user the option to simultaneously set temperatures based on individual preferences.

The ductless mini split not only allows for temperature flexibility, it also saves a significant amount of money. Heating and cooling costs can be very high. A ductless mini split system allows the homeowner to specifically heat or cool only those spaces that are being used. There is no need to pay to heat or cool the whole house.

Mini split systems also do not loose energy through the ducts like central forced air systems. Duct losses can account for up to 30% of the energy costs of conditioning air. By choosing a ductless mini split system energy costs can be significantly reduced.

Ductless mini split systems can also create a healthier indoor environment. Studies have shown that duct work associated with traditional forced air systems can be a major source of indoor pollutants such as dust, mold spores, and allergens. When air is forced through the ducts these pollutants are spread throughout the house. A ductless system not only avoids these problems, they also have built in filters which can even improve indoor air quality.
