It’s then set in place with a thin set of mortar. It’s important to point out that these mats can typically be cut to shape in order to fit well in irregular areas, but it’s usually best to use full-sized mats wherever possible.

On top of all that is where the actual surface floor is installed — typically tile, stone or concrete, although there are systems available that work with just about any type of surface flooring.

Energy Efficiency

When it comes to home heating systems, radiant floor heat tends to be more energy efficient than traditional systems. Why? Well, radiators typically need to be heated to roughly 150-160°F in order to heat a room effectively. That’s pretty hot if you ask us.

On the other hand, most radiant floor systems only need to run at about 85°F or less, in order to maintain comfortable room temperatures. Lower temperatures means they consume less energy which will keep more money in your wallet during the colder months of the year.

Cold Spots

With a traditional radiator system, the radiators heat the air closest to them first. This can create cold spots throughout the room, especially in areas that are furthest from the heat source.

On the flip side, radiant floor heating systems cover the entire floor and provide warmth up throughout the entire room, eliminating any potential cold spots you might have been experiencing previously.

Ultimately, radiant floor systems tend to provide more uniform warmth in any given room which can make your home feel much more comfortable. Traditional heating systems are more likely to make some rooms feel too warm, while other areas feel too chilly.

Retaining Heat

Unlike traditional heating systems that turn off and provide no heat as the system powers down, radiant systems retain heat for a much longer period of time. How is this possible? It comes as a result of the systems being buried within thermal masses such as cement board. This means you won’t have to run your system as frequently which can help you save on energy bills.
